Driving times, bus routes and private transfer options for reaching Yala National Park from Colombo, the airport, Ella, Mirissa, Galle and Arugam Bay, plus how to time your arrival for a safari.

Full Story

Yala is in the far southeast of Sri Lanka, and there is no train line or regular flight that takes you there. Almost everyone arrives by road, either with a private driver or by bus, and the last stretch is always the same: to Tissamaharama or Kirinda, then 20 to 30 minutes to the Palatupana gate.

Here is how long it takes from the places people usually come from, and the easiest way to do each journey.

Travel times at a glance

FromBy carBy bus
Colombo4 to 5 hours via the Southern Expressway5 to 7 hours, often with a change
Bandaranaike Airport5 to 6 hoursNot practical in one go
EllaAbout 2 hours3 to 4 hours with a change at Wellawaya
Mirissa or Weligama2.5 to 3 hours3.5 to 4.5 hours, change at Matara
TangalleAbout 1.5 to 2 hours2 to 3 hours
Galle3 to 3.5 hours4 to 5 hours
Arugam BayAbout 4 hoursLong, several changes
Kandy5 to 6 hours7 hours or more

Times are to Tissamaharama and depend on traffic, stops and the time of day.

From Colombo

The quickest route is the Southern Expressway, which runs south past Galle and Matara towards Hambantota. From the end of the expressway it is a short drive east through Hambantota to Tissa. A private car with a driver is the easiest option and lets you stop on the way. Buses run from Colombo to Tissamaharama and Kataragama, including expressway services, but timetables change and you may need to change in Matara or Hambantota.

If you are tempted to do Yala as a day trip from Colombo, read is a one-day safari from Colombo worth it? first. Most people find it too much driving for the time in the park.

From Ella

This is one of the most popular routes, because many travellers combine the hill country with Yala and then the south coast. The road drops steeply out of the hills through Wellawaya, past waterfalls and viewpoints, and takes about two hours by car. A tuk-tuk is possible but slow and tiring for this distance.

By bus, take a bus from Ella to Wellawaya, then change for Tissamaharama. Allow three to four hours. Many guesthouses in Ella also arrange combined transfer and safari packages, where the driver collects you very early, takes you on a morning safari and drops you in Tissa or onward to the coast.

From Mirissa, Weligama and the south coast

From Mirissa, follow the coast road east through Matara and Tangalle, or join the expressway, then continue to Hambantota and Tissa. It takes around two and a half to three hours. Buses run along the coast with a likely change at Matara. If you are staying in Tangalle, you are the closest of the beach towns, at under two hours.

From Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay and Yala are close as the crow flies but there is no road through the park, so you go around it through Monaragala and Buttala, which takes about four hours. If you are already in Arugam Bay, it is worth considering Kumana National Park instead, which is much closer and shares the same wildlife.

Private driver, taxi app or bus?

  • Private driver: The most comfortable and flexible. Good value if you are two or more people, and easy to arrange through your hotel.
  • Ride-hailing apps: Available in many towns for longer journeys and often cheaper than a hotel-booked taxi. Confirm the driver is happy with the full distance.
  • Bus: Very cheap and a real slice of local life, but slow and crowded, with limited space for luggage.
  • Tuk-tuk: Fine for short hops from Tissa to the gate or to Kirinda, but not for long journeys.

Getting from Tissa to the safari

You do not need your own transport for the safari itself. Safari jeeps collect you from your hotel in Tissa or Kirinda, usually around 5:00 to 5:30 am for a morning drive. Make sure you have booked your jeep the day before. Our safari booking guide explains what to ask.

Timing your arrival

  • Arriving by mid-afternoon lets you do an afternoon drive on day one.
  • If you arrive late, rest and do a morning drive the next day, when leopard chances are best.
  • Check the Block 1 closure dates if you are travelling between September and mid-October. See our closure guide.
