You are in a safari jeep in Yala National Park at dawn. A leopard steps out of the scrub and onto the red dirt track, pauses, and looks straight at you. Everyone takes photos. Then someone asks the question that follows almost every sighting in Yala: which leopard is that?
Most visitors never find out. LeopardID, a free Android app from Sri Lankan developer Codic, is built to answer that question. You give it a clear photo of the leopard you saw, and it compares the markings against a catalogue of Yala leopards that have already been identified. It then shows you the closest match, so a sighting becomes a meeting with a known animal.
Why every leopard can be identified
No two leopards share the same coat. The rosettes on the body and the small solid spots on the face, especially the rows above the eyes and along the cheeks and muzzle, form a pattern that works like a fingerprint. Researchers in Sri Lanka have used spot-pattern variation to tell individual Sri Lankan leopards (Panthera pardus kotiya) apart since the late 1980s. Wildlife photographers and trackers in Yala have used the same principle for years to keep track of the park's best-known cats.
Doing this by eye is slow and takes experience. You have to hold hundreds of face patterns in your head, or scroll through folders of reference photos. LeopardID moves that comparison into your phone.
How LeopardID works
- Photograph the leopard. Aim for a sharp, well-lit shot of the face. Front-on and side-on views work best, because the facial spot pattern is what the app compares.
- Upload the photo in the app. LeopardID checks the markings against its database of identified Yala leopards.
- See the best match. The app returns the individual that matches most closely, with its reference photos so you can compare the spots yourself.
Beyond matching, you can browse the catalogue. Leopards are listed with their home ranges, so you can filter to the part of the park you visited. You can also sort by the date each leopard was last seen, which shows you the cats that turn up most often in Yala's Block I and Block V.
The Yala leopard codes
Each identified leopard gets a unique code instead of a nickname. Codes start with YM or YF: the Y stands for Yala and the M or F for male or female, followed by a number. A fixed code means a sighting logged by one visitor can be linked to sightings of the same animal by others, across seasons and across years.
The catalogue comes from the long-running Yala Leopard Diary effort. That group of young Sri Lankan wildlife conservationists and photographers began collecting identification data in 2013. From 2017 they shared identified leopards with the public and invited visitors to send in their own photos for identification.
Why it matters for conservation
Yala has one of the highest leopard densities in the world. Knowing individual animals, rather than just counting sightings, is what makes serious population work possible: estimating numbers and density, mapping territories, following mothers and cubs, and noticing when a familiar leopard disappears.
Photo identification is not as simple as it sounds. Published research from Yala's Block I found that leopards' spot and rosette formations can change over time, with 29 such changes recorded in continuously observed animals. Relying on one small patch of spots can therefore mislead. The same study recommended comparing at least nine or ten separate spot areas before confirming an identity, and estimated that Block I alone holds at least 77 leopards.
This is why every photo counts. Each clear image uploaded from a safari jeep adds another reference point for an individual. The more photos the system holds, the more accurate matching becomes, and each visitor's camera adds to a shared record of Yala's leopards.
Tips for getting a photo LeopardID can match
- Get the face. A clear front or side view of the head matters more than a dramatic full-body shot.
- Use a fast shutter speed. Early-morning light in Yala is soft. Raise your ISO before you accept a blurry frame.
- Take several frames. Leopards turn their heads constantly. A short burst gives you both angles.
- Crop, don't zoom digitally. Upload the sharpest original you have and crop around the head if needed.
- Note where and when. Knowing the block and the time of the sighting helps when you check the match against home ranges.

Using the app responsibly on safari
Identification should never come at the cost of the animal. Stay in the jeep and keep your voice down. Never ask your driver to crowd, chase or block a leopard for a better angle.
