Sri Lankan sloth bears are shy and hard to find, but in the right park and season you have a real chance. Where to go, the palu fruit season, how to stay safe and what to expect.

Full Story

Ask Sri Lankan safari drivers which animal excites them most, and many will say the sloth bear, not the leopard. Leopards are seen most days in Yala. A bear ambling across the track, or sitting up in a palu tree with its long claws hooked over a branch, is a much rarer moment.

The Sri Lankan sloth bear (Melursus ursinus inornatus) is a subspecies found only on the island. It is smaller than the Indian form, with a shaggy black coat, a pale snout and a diet made up mostly of termites, ants and fruit. Here is how to give yourself the best chance of seeing one.

Where to see sloth bears

Yala National Park

Yala is the most reliable place for sightings, simply because so many drives happen there and the habitat is open. Bears are seen in Block 1 fairly regularly in the dry season, especially near palu trees and rocky areas. See our Yala safari guide.

Wilpattu National Park

Wilpattu is excellent for bears, and many drivers consider it the best park for them. The thick forest makes them harder to spot, but the quiet tracks mean a sighting is often long and undisturbed. See our Wilpattu safari guide.

Wasgamuwa National Park

Wasgamuwa, between Polonnaruwa and Matale, is less visited but has a good reputation for bears and elephants. It is a nice option if you are already in the Cultural Triangle. See our Wasgamuwa guide.

Other places

Bears also live in Kumana, Gal Oya, Maduru Oya and other dry-zone forests, but sightings in these parks are less frequent.

When to go: the palu season

The single best time for sloth bears is during the palu fruiting season, roughly from late May to July. Palu (Manilkara hexandra) is a large tree common in the dry zone, and its small sweet fruit draws bears out of the forest in daylight. They climb up into the trees to feed, or collect fallen fruit underneath, and can be surprisingly easy to see.

Outside palu season, bears are mostly active at night and around dawn and dusk, and sightings are much more a matter of luck.

Best time of day

Sloth bears are mostly nocturnal but often active at dawn and late afternoon, especially in the cooler hours. In palu season, they may also be seen in the middle of the day. Early morning drives give the best overall chance.

How to spot a sloth bear

  • Look up into palu trees for a dark, shaggy shape in the branches.
  • Watch rocky areas and termite mounds. Bears dig into mounds with their long claws and suck out the insects, making a loud huffing noise you can sometimes hear from the jeep.
  • Listen for alarm calls. Sambar and spotted deer react to bears as well as leopards.
  • Check the tracks. Bear prints are broad, with long claw marks in front of the toes.

Are sloth bears dangerous?

Sloth bears can be aggressive if surprised at close range, and they cause more serious injuries to people in Sri Lanka than leopards do. That mostly happens to villagers on foot in the forest, not to people in safari jeeps. On safari, stay in the vehicle, keep quiet and let the driver keep a respectful distance. Never ask to get out for a photo.

Conservation

The sloth bear is listed as vulnerable, and the Sri Lankan subspecies faces habitat loss and conflict with people who gather forest products. Visiting the parks and choosing responsible operators helps show that living wildlife is worth more than cleared forest.

Planning a bear-focused safari

  • Best combination: Yala or Wilpattu, June or July, two or three early morning drives.
  • Tell your driver that bears are a priority. Good trackers know which palu trees are fruiting.
  • Bring binoculars: Bears in trees are often partly hidden by leaves.
  • Combine with leopards: The same parks and season are excellent for both. See our leopard guide.
