About This Destination

Makandawa Forest Reserve is a pristine rainforest located across the kelani river in Kitulgala. Designated as a forest reserve, it is one of the most richly biodiverse areas in Sri Lanka, second only to the Sinharaja Rain Forest.

For nature lovers, crossing the river by traditional canoe to enter the dense, emerald canopy of Makandawa is an adventure in itself. The reserve is world-renowned among bird watchers, as it is home to many endemic bird species such as the Sri Lanka Orange-billed Babbler, Chestnut-backed Owlet, and the Red-faced Malkoha.

Explore the winding nature trails under the giant bamboo and mahogany trees, cool off in hidden waterfalls, and immerse yourself in the natural tranquility of Sri Lanka's wet zone.
