Full Story

Sinharaja Forest Reserve

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sinharaja is the last viable area of primary tropical rainforest in Sri Lanka. It is an absolute hotspot for endemics. Here you can spot the Red-faced Malkoha, the Sri Lanka Blue Magpie, and the Ashy-headed Laughingthrush.

Kumana National Park

Located in the eastern sector of Yala, Kumana is renowned for its avifauna, particularly its large flocks of migratory waterfowl and wading birds. The Kumana Villu, a 200-hectare natural swamp lake, is the park's centerpiece where you can observe Painted Storks, Spoonbills, and Pelicans.

Bundala National Park

Bundala is an internationally important wintering ground for migratory water birds in Sri Lanka. It's famous for being the winter home of the Greater Flamingo, which visits in large flocks. The park's lagoons and salt pans attract a myriad of waders and terns.

Horton Plains National Park

For highland endemics, Horton Plains is unmatched. At an altitude of over 2000 meters, you can find the Sri Lanka Whistling Thrush, the Yellow-eared Bulbul, and the Sri Lanka Bush Warbler amidst the cloud forests and grasslands.
