Rising dramatically from the surrounding jungle, Sigiriya Rock Fortress is arguably Sri Lanka's most breathtaking historical site. Getting to the summit involves a steep but rewarding ascent up roughly 1,200 steps.
What You Will See
- The Mirror Wall: Originally polished so seamlessly that the king could see his reflection, it is now famous for centuries-old visitor inscriptions.
- The Maidens of the Clouds: Delicate, colorful frescoes tucked beneath a rock overhang depicting ethereal women.
- The Lion Terrace: As you approach the final climb, massive stone lion paws guard the staircase, hinting at the grandeur of the palace that once stood at the pinnacle.
Pro Tip: To beat both the intense midday heat and the largest tour groups, aim to arrive right when the gates open early in the morning.
