Full Story
Sitting right in the center of Sri Lanka's bustling commercial capital, Beira Lake acts as an oasis of calm surrounded by towering commercial skyscrapers and glowing city lights. The lake is vast, spanning over 160 acres, and is famously known for the abundance of pelicans and colorful swan boats gliding across its green waters.
The Seema Malaka Architecture
As a photographer, one of the most compelling subjects here is the Seema Malaka. Designed by the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, this beautiful Buddhist temple rests on three connected platforms floating on the water. The intricate wooden architecture of the temple against the backdrop of deep blue glass high-rises makes for an incredible, high-contrast composition that blends ancient spirituality with rapid urban development.
Best Time to Visit
For the best lighting and ambiance, visit the lake during dusk. When the sun begins to set, the sky paints itself in vibrant purples and oranges. The reflection of the newly lit modern buildings creates a mesmerizing mirror effect on the water, providing the perfect conditions for landscape photography and romantic evening walks.
