New Visa Regulations: 30-Day Free ETA for 40 Nations
In a major boost for tourism, the Sri Lankan Department of Immigration and Emigration has announced a new visa policy. With effect from May 25, 2026, nationals from 40 selected countries are eligible to obtain a tourist Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) free of charge for a period of 30 days.
This initiative aims to make travel to the teardrop island more accessible, seamless, and affordable for international visitors, encouraging tourism growth and cultural exchange.
List of Eligible Countries
The free tourist visa scheme applies to passport holders (including Diplomatic, Official, Service, and Ordinary passports) from the following 40 countries:

Key Rules and Details of the Scheme
- ETA is Mandatory: Please note that all foreign nationals, including nationals of the above-mentioned 40 countries, must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) prior to their arrival in Sri Lanka. This can be processed online.
- Reciprocal Bilateral Agreements: Nationals of Maldives, Seychelles, and Singapore will continue to receive free ETAs under their existing reciprocal bilateral agreements. Maldivian nationals receive a 90-day tourist visa through the ETA system.
- No Fees: The ETA application fee is fully waived for eligible nationals under this scheme. However, any ETA fees paid by applicants prior to May 25, 2026, are non-refundable.
- Validity & Entry: The free tourist visa is valid for 30 days (90 days for Maldivians) and permits a double-entry facility from the date of first arrival in Sri Lanka, provided both entries occur within the 30-day validity window.
- Extensions: Travelers who wish to stay in Sri Lanka beyond the initial 30 days are permitted to apply for a visa extension. However, extensions are subject to the payment of standard visa fees.
- Other Nations: Passport holders from countries not included in this list remain subject to the standard rules, regulations, and fee structures governing the Sri Lanka ETA system.
How to Apply for Your Free Sri Lanka ETA
- Go to the official Electronic Travel Authorization portal at www.eta.gov.lk.
- Submit your details and travel itinerary through the online application form.
- Select your eligible nationality. The system will automatically waive the fee during checkout for the 40 specified countries.
- Receive your ETA approval via email within 24 to 48 hours. Ensure you print a copy or keep the digital confirmation on your phone to present at border control upon arrival.
