Two different kinds of safari experience
While most Sri Lankan parks hold a mix of species, travellers often plan their trip around one headline animal: the elusive leopard, or the more reliably visible elephant.
Where to go for leopards
Yala and Wilpattu are the strongest choices for leopard sightings, thanks to their high leopard density, though sightings are never guaranteed since leopards are naturally elusive, solitary animals.
Where to go for elephants
Udawalawe offers the most consistent elephant sightings year-round, while Minneriya and its neighbouring parks add the seasonal spectacle of "The Gathering," when hundreds of elephants congregate at once.
Which is easier to plan around?
Elephant sightings are generally easier to plan around, since herds are large, visible in open terrain, and present for most of the year at parks like Udawalawe. Leopard sightings require more patience and, ideally, more than one drive.
Can you do both?
Yes. Many itineraries combine an elephant-focused park like Udawalawe with a leopard-focused park like Yala, especially since both sit in Sri Lanka's south and can be visited within the same regional trip.
Which should you prioritise?
If you can only choose one and a specific sighting matters most to you, base your choice on that priority. If general wildlife variety matters more than one headline species, most Sri Lankan parks offer a worthwhile mix regardless of which one you choose.
