Where to Stay Near Yala National Park: Tissa, Kirinda or a Safari Camp?

The best base for a Yala safari depends on your budget and how early you want to wake up. Here is how Tissamaharama, Kirinda, the park-edge camps and day trips from Ella or the coast compare.

Full Story

Where you sleep makes a surprising difference to a Yala safari. The best leopard time is the first hour after the gates open at around 6:00 am, and every extra kilometre between your bed and the Palatupana gate means an earlier alarm. Staying close also makes it easy to do a morning drive, rest through the heat and go back out in the afternoon.

These are the main options, with honest pros and cons.

Tissamaharama: the practical choice

Distance to Palatupana gate: About 30 minutes.

Tissa, as everyone calls it, is a small town built around a large ancient reservoir, Tissa Wewa, and the big white Tissamaharama stupa. It is the main base for Yala and has the widest choice of places to stay, from simple family guesthouses to comfortable hotels with pools. It also has restaurants, ATMs, shops and plenty of safari operators, so it is easy to book a jeep the evening before.

Good for: Most travellers, budget to mid-range, people who want choice and convenience.

Downsides: Slightly further from the gate than Kirinda, and the town itself is not especially pretty, though the lake at sunset is lovely.

Kirinda: closer and quieter

Distance to Palatupana gate: About 20 minutes.

Kirinda is a fishing village on the coast south of Tissa, with a temple on a big rock above the sea and a long, wild beach. There are fewer places to stay, but several are comfortable and some have sea views. It is a little closer to the gate and much quieter in the evenings.

Good for: Couples, people who want the beach and the park in one place, early risers.

Downsides: Fewer restaurants and services. The sea here is rough and not safe for swimming most of the year.

Park-edge lodges and tented camps

Distance to gate: Often 10 to 20 minutes, some right on the boundary.

A number of lodges and luxury tented camps sit along Yala's edges. Some are next to the park boundary, so elephants, deer and even leopards occasionally wander nearby. Many include safaris, meals and transfers in the price.

Good for: Honeymooners, wildlife lovers who want to be immersed, travellers who want everything arranged.

Downsides: Higher prices, and you are more dependent on the camp for food and transport.

Park bungalows

The Department of Wildlife Conservation runs a few basic bungalows and campsites inside Yala. Staying inside the park is a unique experience, but they book up far in advance, facilities are simple and they are mostly used by Sri Lankan groups. If you are interested, ask a local operator to check availability well ahead.

Day trips from further away

It is possible to do Yala as a day trip, but you give up sleep and often the best part of the morning.

  • From Ella: About two hours. A 3:30 am start gets you to the gate for opening. Many people do this, but it is a long day.
  • From Mirissa, Weligama or Tangalle: Two to three hours. Tangalle is the closest of the south coast beach towns.
  • From Galle: About three to three and a half hours each way.
  • From Colombo: Four to five hours on the expressway. Not recommended as a day trip.

If you have the time, one night in Tissa or Kirinda makes the whole experience better. See how to get to Yala for transport options.

How many nights?

  • One night: Arrive in the afternoon, do an evening drive or rest, then a morning drive the next day.
  • Two nights: Two or three drives, which is ideal for leopards, plus time for Bundala or Kataragama.
  • Three nights: Add Block 5, Kumana or a full-day safari.

Our guide to how many days you need for a safari has sample plans.

Things to do near Yala between drives

  • Bundala National Park, around 30 minutes from Tissa, for flamingos and water birds. See our Bundala guide.
  • Kataragama, a major pilgrimage town about 30 minutes north, especially atmospheric during the evening puja.
  • Sithulpawwa, an ancient rock monastery on the edge of the park.
  • Tissa Wewa at sunset, with birds and fishermen on the water.
