Yala Block 1 vs Block 5: Which Should You Choose?

Block 1 has the best leopard odds and the biggest crowds. Block 5 is quieter, greener and more relaxed. Here is how the two Yala blocks compare for wildlife, scenery, access and cost.

Full Story

When people talk about "doing Yala", they almost always mean Block 1. It is where the famous leopards live, where the postcard rocks and lagoons are, and where nearly all the jeeps go. But Yala is much bigger than one block, and Block 5 has become a popular alternative for people who want a calmer safari.

Neither is better in every way. It depends on what you want from the day.

The quick answer

  • Choose Block 1 if it is your first time, you only have one or two drives, and seeing a leopard is the top priority.
  • Choose Block 5 if you have already done Block 1, you dislike crowds, or you are visiting while Block 1 is closed.
  • Do both if you have three or more drives. A morning in Block 1 and an afternoon in Block 5 gives you contrast and spreads your chances.

Block 1: the classic Yala

Block 1 is the southwestern part of the park, entered from the Palatupana gate near Tissamaharama and Kirinda. It is the oldest section, with the most developed track network and a landscape that packs a lot into a small area: scrub jungle, open plains, waterholes, rocky outcrops, lagoons and the coast at Patanangala.

Why people love it: Leopard density here is among the highest in the world, and many cats are relaxed around vehicles. Elephants, crocodiles, buffalo, deer and water birds are almost guaranteed. Drivers know the individual leopards and where they spend their days.

The downside: Crowds. In peak season, hundreds of jeeps can enter in a morning. A leopard sighting near a main track can quickly turn into a traffic jam, which is stressful for the animal and not much fun for you.

Closure: Block 1 usually closes for several weeks from early September to mid-October. See our annual closure guide.

Block 5: the quiet side

Block 5 lies in the north of the Yala complex, closer to the Lunugamvehera area and reached through a different entrance. It has more reservoirs and greener, denser vegetation than Block 1, with a more remote feel.

Why people love it: Far fewer vehicles. It is common to have sightings to yourself. Elephants are frequently seen around the water, birdlife is good and the landscape feels wilder.

The downside: Leopards are present but harder to find, and they are shyer because they see fewer jeeps. Drives can be longer and bumpier, and fewer drivers specialise in this block.

Closure: Block 5 often stays open when Block 1 closes, which makes it a useful fallback in September and early October. Confirm with your operator before you go.

What about the other blocks?

Block 2 adjoins Block 1 and is sometimes included on longer drives. Blocks 3 and 4 are large and seldom visited by tourists, and the Strict Nature Reserve is closed to the public. For most travellers, Block 1 and Block 5 are the only realistic choices.

Cost and booking

Park fees are broadly similar for both blocks, but jeep prices can differ because Block 5 involves a longer drive from Tissamaharama and fewer operators run it. Ask for a quote that names the block and the gate. If you book a multi-day Yala tour, it is worth asking whether one drive can be in Block 5 for variety. For the full breakdown of fees, see our safari cost guide.

A sample plan using both blocks

  1. Day 1 afternoon: Block 1, focusing on rocks and waterholes as leopards wake up.
  2. Day 2 morning: Block 1 at gate opening, following up on fresh tracks.
  3. Day 2 afternoon: Rest, or a short visit to Bundala for birds.
  4. Day 3 morning: Block 5 for a quieter drive and a different landscape.
