Yala gives better leopard odds, Wilpattu gives you the jungle almost to yourself. An honest comparison of Sri Lanka's two leopard parks on sightings, crowds, scenery, access and when to go.

Full Story

If you ask ten Sri Lankan safari drivers which park is better for leopards, most will say Yala. Ask them which park they enjoy more, and quite a few will say Wilpattu. That sums up the choice pretty well.

Both parks have healthy leopard populations. The difference is in how easy the cats are to see, how many other people you will be sharing them with, and what the rest of the experience feels like.

The short version

  • Yala is the better bet if you have limited time and a leopard is the main goal.
  • Wilpattu is the better experience if you want quiet, wild forest and are happy to work a little harder for a sighting.
  • If you can, do both. They are on opposite sides of the island and fit naturally into different parts of an itinerary.

Leopard sightings

Yala's Block 1 is relatively open, with low scrub, plains and rocky outcrops, and its leopards are used to vehicles. Many visitors see a leopard on their first drive in the dry season. Wilpattu's forest is taller and thicker, and the cats are more spread out across a much larger area, so finding one takes more time. When you do, the sighting is often calmer and longer, because there may be no other jeeps around.

A fair rule of thumb: one or two drives in Yala give similar odds to two or three in Wilpattu.

Crowds

This is where the parks differ most. Yala is Sri Lanka's most visited park, and in peak season the main tracks of Block 1 can be very busy. Popular leopards can be surrounded by many vehicles. Wilpattu gets a fraction of the traffic. Long stretches of track with no other jeeps are normal, and that silence makes the forest feel very different.

Landscape

Yala packs a lot into a small area: scrub, grassland, huge granite boulders, lagoons and a wild coastline. It is dry, open and bright, and great for photography.

Wilpattu is dense dry-zone forest dotted with villus, natural shallow lakes ringed by white sand. Driving from one villu to the next, with the forest closing in between, feels like exploring rather than touring.

Other wildlife

Both parks have elephants, sloth bears, spotted deer, sambar, buffalo, crocodiles, wild boar and excellent birdlife. Yala usually wins for elephants and coastal birds. Wilpattu is particularly good for sloth bears, especially in the palu fruit season around June and July, and its villus attract many water birds.

Size and drive length

Wilpattu is Sri Lanka's largest national park, at over 1,300 square kilometres, though only part of it is open to visitors. Distances between sightings can be long, so many people choose a full day here. Yala's Block 1 is more compact, and a half-day drive covers a good portion of it.

When to go

YalaWilpattu
Best monthsFebruary to JulyFebruary to October
Annual closureBlock 1 usually closed September to mid-OctoberNo regular closure
Wettest periodNovember to JanuaryOctober to December

Because Yala's Block 1 usually closes in September and early October, Wilpattu is the natural choice for leopards at that time of year. See our best time for a leopard safari guide for more.

Getting there

Yala is in the southeast, about 30 minutes from Tissamaharama, two hours from Ella and two and a half to three and a half hours from the south coast beaches. It pairs well with Ella, Mirissa and Galle.

Wilpattu is in the northwest. The main Hunuwilagama entrance is roughly 45 minutes to an hour from Anuradhapura and about four hours from Colombo. It pairs well with the Cultural Triangle, Anuradhapura and the Kalpitiya coast.

Cost

Park fees for foreign visitors are in a similar range at both parks, and jeep hire is comparable for a half day. Wilpattu's full-day drives are more common, so expect to pay more if you choose one. Our safari cost guide has current ranges.

Which should you choose?

  • First time in Sri Lanka, two days near the south coast: Yala.
  • Travelling between Colombo and the Cultural Triangle: Wilpattu.
  • Visiting in September or early October: Wilpattu.
  • Serious photographer who hates crowds: Wilpattu, with patience.
  • Family with young children and limited time: Yala, a morning half day.
