# Gal Oya Boat & Elephant Safari

> Sri Lanka's only national park boat safari

Gal Oya is Sri Lanka's best-kept wildlife secret. The vast Senanayake Samudra reservoir sits at the heart of the park, and from a silent catamaran you can watch wild elephant herds swim between islands — a spectacle found nowhere else on the island. This 3-day expedition combines morning boat safaris with afternoon jeep drives through dry-zone jungle to encounter leopards, water buffalo, axis deer, and hundreds of waterbirds. With far fewer visitors than Yala or Udawalawe, every sighting feels truly wild.

## Itinerary

### Day 1: Arrival & Afternoon Jeep Safari

Arrive in Ampara and settle into your accommodation. In the late afternoon, head out on your first jeep drive through the park's dry-zone scrub jungle, watching for elephants at watering holes and leopards on rocky outcrops as the light softens at golden hour.

- 15:30 — Afternoon jeep safari: 3-hour drive through Block 1 focusing on elephant herds at watering holes

### Day 2: Sunrise Boat Safari & Full-Day Jeep Drive

Rise before dawn to board your catamaran as mist rises off the reservoir. Drift silently past swimming elephant herds and roosting waterbirds. After breakfast, re-enter the park for a full-day jeep safari covering the less-visited eastern sectors, returning for sunset.

- 05:30 — Sunrise boat safari: 2-hour catamaran safari on Senanayake Samudra — prime elephant swimming window
- 09:00 — Picnic breakfast: Breakfast by the reservoir shore
- 10:00 — Full-day jeep safari: Eastern sectors of the park, focusing on leopard and buffalo habitat

### Day 3: Morning Boat Safari & Departure

One final sunrise boat safari before a leisurely breakfast and departure. Your naturalist will debrief the trip, sharing identification tips for every species you recorded over the three days.

- 05:30 — Morning boat safari: Final 2-hour catamaran safari
- 08:00 — Breakfast & departure: Hotel drop-off and farewell
