Where leopard sightings are most likely
Yala National Park has one of the highest recorded leopard densities in the world within its open blocks, making it the top choice for travellers focused specifically on leopards. Wilpattu also holds a healthy leopard population, with a quieter, less crowded experience.
Best season for leopard sightings
The dry season, roughly February to July at Yala, tends to draw leopards toward remaining water sources and open ground, making them easier to spot than during the wetter months when dense vegetation offers more cover.
Morning or evening for leopards
Leopards are most active around dawn and dusk, making both early morning and late afternoon drives strong choices. Some guides favour early morning, when leopards may still be finishing a night's hunting activity before resting through the heat of the day.
Managing expectations
No safari operator can guarantee a leopard sighting, since these are genuinely wild, elusive animals. A two-day safari with both a morning and an evening drive meaningfully improves your overall odds compared with a single drive.

Within Yala, ask your operator about which block has had recent leopard activity, since sightings can cluster in particular areas for weeks at a time depending on prey movement and territory.
