What is "The Gathering"?
As the dry season advances, the reservoir at the heart of Minneriya National Park recedes, exposing fresh grassland that draws elephants from a wide surrounding area. Hundreds of elephants can congregate here at once, making it one of the largest wild elephant gatherings anywhere in the world.
When does the gathering happen?
The gathering typically builds from around July and peaks between August and October, though exact timing shifts with rainfall each year. Elephants can also be seen at Minneriya and neighbouring parks outside this window, just in smaller numbers.
Minneriya, Kaudulla and Hurulu Eco Park
Elephants move between Minneriya and nearby Kaudulla National Park and Hurulu Eco Park depending on water levels and grazing conditions. A good local guide will know which of the three is currently best and can adjust your booking accordingly.
What else to see at Minneriya
Beyond elephants, Minneriya supports deer, water buffalo, crocodiles and abundant birdlife around its reservoir, making it a worthwhile safari destination even outside gathering season.
Getting to Minneriya
Minneriya sits within Sri Lanka's cultural triangle, close to Sigiriya, Dambulla and Habarana, making it an easy half-day add-on to a cultural triangle itinerary rather than a dedicated detour.
Booking a gathering season safari
Gathering season is Minneriya's busiest period, so book your jeep and accommodation in the area well ahead of time, and consider an evening drive when the light is often best for photographing large herds against the water.
