The Hikkaduwa National Park, located on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, was once regarded as one of the most spectacular fringing coral reefs in the Indian Ocean. Decades ago, stepping into the warm shallow waters meant stepping into an alien world teeming with rainbow-colored hard and soft corals, dense schools of tropical fish, and an abundance of green sea turtles.
The Decline: What Happened?
Today, the reef tells a starkly different story. The tragic decline of Hikkaduwa’s coral reef is a textbook case of environmental stress. A combination of severe global coral bleaching events (most notably the 1998 El Niño), unregulated glass-bottom boat tourism, pollution, and coral mining decimated the living reef. The vibrant underwater city has largely turned into broken, algae-covered rubble fields.
Conservation and the Future
While the present state seems grim, there is hope. Protected marine boundaries are now enforced more strictly, and local conservation initiatives are working tirelessly on coral fragment replanting. While it may take decades for the reef to fully recover its historical glory, the current plight of Hikkaduwa serves as a crucial warning and a powerful testament to the fragility of our marine ecosystems.
